About six years ago, I started collecting labels and/or caps from ales and lagers that I sampled during my travels. When I go to a new city, I try to visit the local microbreweries and, if possible, take a tour. When people come to visit, they bring new beer for me to try. I am not a home brewer, just a consumer. These are my observations about the ales and lagers that I have sampled.

Sam!
Ok, Sam is the dog in the picture and he belongs to a good friend of mine. He gave me this Yuengling Light on my last trip to Philadelphia. Yuengling is the oldest continuing operating brewery in the US. Their lager is fairly standard across PA and it's not bad. The Light version isn't much different from the full calorie lager.
ditto on loving Yuengling - reminds me of home, as my dad drilled a hole in the door of our fridge to install a tap that always has Yuengling (light lager in the summer, porter in the winter, and the good old regular at other times). yummmm
I started experimenting with microbrews about ten years ago. Before that, I thought that staying away from the macrobrews meant that I appreciated beer. I was wrong. I started trying stouts before moving on to doppelbocks, wheat ales, witbiers, Belgian tripels, farmhouse ales and sour ales. I am not much of an IPA fan, but my appreciation of hops is maturing. I am not an expert, I just know what I like, or, more accurately, what I don't like. I hope you find this informative, but I would settle for entertaining.
